Smart health

Over 150 high-tech companies in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region work in the Smart Health sector. Healthcare digitalisation, in the fields of diagnostics, therapies, assistance and translational research, is one of the most important economic growth factors in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, which is characterised by a high amount of elderly citizens. They are the public of reference for the "smart health" sector (32% of the total population is over 60 years, compared to 12% of the world's population, with Trieste having the largest elderly population in Italy and the world). The companies engaged in this new technology sector are involved in Biomedicals (BioMed), Biotechnology (BioTech) and Bioinformatics (BiolCT). These sectors are related, and can be defined, as a whole, as a single BioHighTech technology segment. This segment has developed thanks to a widespread entrepreneurial presence on the regional territory in traditional Healthcare, Social Services, Domotic, Chemical-Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics, Agri-Food and Environmental sectors. Enterprises are supported in their innovation by a public research system, consisting of Universities, Research Organisations, Training and Social-Healthcare Institutes, which operates at an excellence level. This segment recorded a total turnover of around 900 million euro in 2014 with over 5,000 employees, a 15% increase compared to 2012 for both parameters.
